Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, ...
If you haven't heard it yet, you'll hear about it soon: The most interesting man in the world will become the most interesting man in two worlds. He's heading to Mars on a one-way trip.
Check out the commercial, then re-read the verse from Hebrews:
Let's see: He's surrounded by a cloud of witnesses. He is throwing off various earthly things. And he begins a "race" to Mars.
Now, I know nothing about the beliefs of the actor who played the part or the beer company that has made millions of this advertising campaign.
But it does make me think - this verse and the ones following in Hebrews might illustrate not ancient beliefs and philosophies but ideas that live to this day.
Are you surrounded by witnesses? That is, people who mean something to you? Do you have "baggage" that limits you? Then let's not go to Mars but rather begin our "races" for God, whatever those might be. And the greatest news here - God is interested in you, just as much as the ad character.
